Great Britain Gold Britannia 1 troy ounce bullion coins were first minted by the Royal Mint in London, England, in 1987. Originally the coins were minted in 91.7% 22K gold. It wasn’t until 2013 that the Royal Mint decided to shift from 22K coins to 99.99% pure 24K gold coins. Each coin is considered British legal tender and carries a face value of 100 British pounds. When the British Gold Britannia debuted in 1987, the Royal minted the coins in 4 different weights: 1 troy ounce, ½ troy ounce, 1/4th troy ounce, and 1/10th troy ounce. When the Royal Mint decided to shift the composition of the coin from 22k to 24K in 2013, they added two different weight denominations: 5 troy ounce and 1/20th troy ounce.
The aesthetics of the 2025 Great Britain Gold Britannia 1 troy ounce bullion coin is truly stunning. On the obverse of the coin, there is an image of Queen Elizabeth II wearing one of the official Crown Jewels of England, the George IV State Diadem Crown. Depicted on the reverse of the Gold Britannia is an image of Britannia herself. She is shown standing on top of a small patch of landholding a shield of the Union Jack in one hand and a trident in the other.
