The U.S. American Silver Eagle Coin has long been considered one of the world’s most beautiful and popular silver bullion coins. Silver American Eagles are the official silver bullion coin of the United States, and each coin contains a precisely 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. Since these coins are minted by the United States Government, they are also considered U.S. currency, and each coin has a $1 USD face value. They were first minted by the United States Mint in 1986.
2025 U.S. American Silver Eagles will mark the end of an era as this is the last issue year to feature the classic design that has been used since 1986. By mid-year 2020, the United States Mint is expected to receive an updated design for its Gold and Silver Eagle bullion coins.
The artwork on these coins is a thing of beauty. The obverse of the coins is a mirror image of Adolph A. Weinman’s “Walking Liberty” design. Weinman’s plan was first introduced in 1916 when the country minted the walking liberty half a dollar. The design was retired in 1947 following the last year of issue for the walking liberty half a dollar. The plan was brought back in 1986 when the U.S. started to mint Silver American Eagles. The reverse of the American Eagle features John Mercanti’s rendition of the heraldic Eagle. Mercanti completes his design by inscribing “United States of America” along with the weight and face value denomination of each coin’s outer edge.
