The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin was first introduced by the Canadian Government and minted by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979. For the first three years, Gold Canadian Maple Leafs were produced in 999 fine gold. Beginning in 1983, the Royal Canadian Mint decided to discontinue the 999 Gold Maple Leaf and started producing the 9999 fine Gold Maple Leaf.
The Royal Canadian Mint has been recognized as the world’s leader in precious metal minting, purity, and security standards. Since 2015 each Gold Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin has displayed a unique textured security privy mark. Each privy mark is a micro-engraved laser etching of a small maple leaf that is only visible under a magnifier. As a further level of security, each Gold Canadian Maple displays two digits of the coin’s production year inside the privy mark. The Royal Canadian Mint further declares its standing as the world leader in bullion security standards by scanning and recording each Maple Leaf during production for future authentication.
The obverse of the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf displays an image of Queen Elizabeth II. On the reverse of the coin, you will see an image of the sugar maple leaf, which is found on the Canadian national flag and various other Canadian cultural institutions.
Each year the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf has minted six different weight totals. These weights include one troy ounce, 1/2 troy ounce, 1/4 troy ounce, 1/10 troy ounce, 1/20 troy ounce, and special 1 Gram gold coins. The Royal Canadian Mint did not start manufacturing quantities of Gold Maple Leafs less than one troy ounce until 1982.
