South African Gold Krugerrands were initially minted in 1967. Gold Krugerrands were the world’s first modern gold bullion coin for global circulation. The coin’s existence was born out of a desire to showcase South African Gold to international markets. Each 1 troy ounce South African Gold Krugerrand is minted by the South African Mint in cooperation with Rand Refinery. Although the 1 troy ounce South African Gold Bullion Coin does not have a face value domination stamped on it, the coin is still considered legal tender. The absence of a face value denomination was intentionally left off of the coin so that its value would always mirror that of an ounce of gold.
South African Gold Krugerrands are stunning coins, and they appear unlike any other gold bullion coin on the market today. Although these coins contain 1 troy ounce of AGW (actual gold weight), they are minted in 22K gold and have a rose gold tint. This is because the other part of the coin is mixed entirely with copper. On the obverse of the coins, there is an image of Paul Kruger, the four-term President of the South African Republic, when the coin was introduced. The reverse of the coin features an image of the native antelope, the springbok.
