The U.S. American Gold Eagle Coin has been considered one of the world’s most liquid and widely recognized gold bullion coins. These coins were first authorized by the United States Government for release in 1986 and are the first gold coin to be backed by the U.S. Government for bullion investment. Gold American Eagles are one of the official gold bullion coins of the United States, and each coin contains exactly one troy ounce of .999 fine Gold. Each American Gold Eagle is produced in .9167 fine Gold mixed with a small bit of silver and copper to improve the durability of each coin. Since these coins are minted by the United States Government, they are also considered U.S. currency, and each coin has a $50 USD face value.
The artwork on these coins is truly a beauty. The obverse of the coin features an image that closely resembles the Saint Gaudens’ $20 Double Eagle design that was first released in 1907. The reverse of the 1 oz American Gold Eagle features Miley Busiek’s 1986 American bald eagle design. Each Gold American Eagle reverse contains the inscriptions “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” and “1 Oz Fine Gold,” along with the face value denomination near each coin’s outer edge.
American Gold Eagle coins are minted in four different sizes: 1/10th, 1/4th, ½, and 1 oz of fine Gold. Each size features identical designs and is fully backed and guaranteed by the U.S. Mint and the United States Government.
